Yemen offers rebels a ceasefire

SANAA (AFP) — Yemen will immediately halt military operations against anti-government rebels if they agree to stop their insurgency, the official Saba news agency said on Thursday.

"Military operations will immediately cease if Abdulmalik al-Huthi...the leader of the current instability in the mountains of Saada... and his followers stop their insurgency and hand over their weapons," Saba said.

Abdulmalik al-Huthi is a grandson of slain Zaidi leader Hussein Badr Eddin al-Huthi.

Thousands of people have died since a three-year-old uprising resumed in January between government forces and followers of al-Huthi who aim to restore the Zaidi imamate, which ruled in Sanaa until a 1962 coup by republican forces.
