Civilian killed in firefight between Hamas and Army of Islam

GAZA CITY (AFP) — Hamas fighters on Tuesday fought gunbattles with Army of Islam militants, killing a civilian, in the Gaza suburb where kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston is believed held, Hamas and witnesses said.

The clashes came after members of Hamas's armed wing set up checkpoints at the entrance to the Sabra neighbourhood, searching vehicles and fanning out around a compound, witnesses said.

Gunmen could be seen hunkered down on nearby high-rise buildings, as well as checking identity cards and searching vehicles at the entrance of the neighbourhood where Palestinians suspect the British journalist could be held.

Hamas said the aim of the operation was to free 10 of its militants kidnapped on Monday by the Army of Islam.
