Spirit of Tiger's father guides superstar in US holiday tribute

BETHESDA, United States (AFP) — New father Tiger Woods recalled his own childhood and paid tribute to his late father and mentor Wednesday in a US Independence Day golf event featuring former US President George H.W. Bush.

Woods played alongside three soldiers and was joined by Bush, the 41st president and father of the current US leader, at the Earl Woods Memorial Pro-Am ahead of Thursday's start of the inaugural PGA National hosted by Woods.

"We talked a little bit about his father, about him growing up - everyday stuff, not much golf talk," said air force sergeant Andy Amor. "It was truly an honor. I was just hoping my game wouldn't rub off on his."
