SYDNEY (AFP) — Key midfielder Tim Cahill has given Australia a boost by declaring himself fit for the Sunday's Asian Cup opener against Oman, reports said Thursday.
The 27-year-old Everton player is most likely to be named as a substitute, and hopes to repeat his heroics of 12 months ago, when he came off the bench to inspire the Socceroos to a come-from-behind 3-1 win in the World Cup opener against Japan.
Cahill announced his return with a 45-minute appearance in an intra-squad match played in Singapore on Tuesday in his first outing since breaking his foot against Sheffield United in early March.
Cahill ran freely, challenged for the ball, and had enough fitness to make his trademark runs from box to box. He also finished a tough running drill at the end of the 60-minute match.
