Villa striker Sutton forced to retire

LONDON (AFP) — Former England striker Chris Sutton has retired from football because of a bad eye injury according to his agent.

Currently on the books at Aston Villa, the 34-year-old Sutton played in just nine matches for the club last season prior to the eye problem that arose in a match against Manchester United on December 23 when he suffered a blow to the head and subsequent concussion.

Sutton's agent Tony McGill told the Daily Express: "Due to an eye injury sustained last year, Chris has been forced into retirement."

Capped just once for England against Cameroon in 1997 Shearer had successful spells with Blackburn Rovers where he partnered Alan Shearer and in Scotland with Celtic where he was the perfect foil for Henrik Larsson.
