More Indonesians desert slopes of smouldering volcano

JAKARTA (AFP) — Hundreds more Indonesians deserted the slopes of a smouldering Indonesian volcano as it coughed smoke and ash for the third consecutive day, police and residents said Wednesday.

Volcanologists warned on Tuesday that an eruption of Mount Gamkonora, located on the island of Halmahera, some 2,700 kilometres (1,600 miles) northeast from Jakarta, may be imminent.

"As of this morning, a total of 8,621 people from eight villages have fled to safer areas," said Risnu Malau, a policeman in Jailolo, a town some 35 kilometres away.

He said most local police had been dispatched to the slopes to help local authorities deal with the displaced.
