ROME (AFP) — A man was hospitalised in Palermo, Sicily, with an allergic reaction to counterfeit Colgate toothpaste, ANSA reported Wednesday after 20,000 tubes of the substance were confiscated at the weekend.

The 30-year-old man, who used the fake Colgate toothpaste, has pustules on his face, the Italian news agency said.

After a warning issued by the Italian health ministry on Saturday, authorities seized some 700 tubes of toothpaste in Sicily, and they are being analysed, ANSA said.

Italian press reports said the counterfeit toothpaste contains industrial solvents, and that the packaging has no writing in Italian and indicates that the product was manufactured in Brazil, Turkey, South Africa or Spain.
