Reagan to receive posthumous medal from Poland

WARSAW (AFP) — Poland plans to bestow its top award on the late US president Ronald Reagan, in a posthumous homage for his role in the collapse of the communist bloc, Polish authorities announced Wednesday.

The wife of the former US leader, Nancy Reagan, is to receive the Order of the White Eagle from Polish President Lech Kaczynski when the latter visits the United States next week, said Kaczynski's aide, Maciej Lopinski.

Kaczynski is scheduled to travel to Washington to meet with current US President George W. Bush on July 16.

Reagan, who famously dubbed the Soviet Union an "evil empire," is widely credited by Poles with having broken the back of communism.
