MOGADISHU (AFP) — A much-delayed Somali reconciliation conference on Sunday opened in Mogadishu amid fears of insurgent attacks and in the absence of the embattled government's main foes.
"I urge you to rise above your respective clan and sub-clan (politics) in order to bring normalcy to our country," conference chairman Ali Mahdi Mohamed told delegates.
"This is a historic opportunity for you to have dialogue and reconciliation in Somalia. Most of previous conferences were unsuccessful because they were held abroad," added Mahdi, a former Mogadishu warlord.
