Malaysia officials under pressure after Asian Cup defeats

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) — Malaysian football officials faced more calls to quit on Monday after the Asian Cup co-hosts' embarrassing performances claimed their first victim.

The sports minister said state officials should walk while media clamoured for more high-ranking departures after the resignation of the country's number two football chief.

Tengku Abdullah Ahmad Sultan Shah, a member of state royalty, announced his resignation after 23 years with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in the wake of Malaysia's 5-1 and 5-0 defeats to China and Uzbekistan.

With newspapers calling for senior officials to step down, Youth and Sports Minister Azalina Othman Said said state authorities were also to blame.
