Dow breaks 14,000 as Wall Street optimism prevails

NEW YORK (AFP) — Wall Street's blue-chip Dow Jones index vaulted Tuesday above 14,000 for the first time as optimism over the outlook for the economy and corporate earnings kept the market rally on track.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded as high as 14,011.79, hitting a new milestone less than three months after smashing the barrier of 13,000.

At 1550 GMT, the benchmark index was up 37.23 points (0.27 percent) at 13,988.21, extending its gains after three record-setting sessions.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 10.54 points (0.39 percent) to 2,707.87. The broad-market Standard Poor's 500 index, which also was flirting with record highs, added 2.32 points (0.15 percent) to 1,551.84.
