Lakers sign cancer-conquering coach's son Karl

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Coby Karl, the cancer-conquering son of Denver Nuggets coach George Karl and a solid backcourt playmaker, was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers, the National Basketball Association team said Monday.

The rookie guard has battled thyroid cancer and underwent a seven-hour operation to remove cancerous cells earlier this year after his season season at Boise State University.

Karl averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior after backing out of a bid last year to take his chances in the NBA Draft. Karl's 1,698 career points rank third on Boise State's all-time list.

In this month's summer league games for NBA hopefuls, Karl averaged 12.2 points and 1.8 rebounds in five games for the Lakers' squad.
