WASHINGTON (AFP) — The White House on Wednesday urged Congress to quickly pass anti-terror legislation that would give the government more flexibility to eavesdrop on suspected terrorists.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said it is imperative that lawmakers act on the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) before departing for a monthlong break.

"Before Congress leaves it is an absolute priority to get FISA reform done," Snow told reporters after President George W. Bush held a breakfast meeting with Congress's Democratic and Republican leaders.

"We need a system that is going to permit our intelligence agencies to act quickly and flexibly (on) intelligence that may be used to keep America safer," he said.
