MOSCOW (AFP) — Sweden's Christian Nilsson carded seven birdies on his way to a first round 65 and a one-shot lead at the Russian Open at the Le Meridien Country Club here on Thursday.

France's Jean-Baptiste Gonnet is in second place with Ireland's Gary Murphy and England's Sam Little a further shot behind in a share of third place after shooting opening 67s.

The 28-year-old Nilsson's most impressive birdie came at the ninth hole where it was achieved despite having driven into a fairway bunker.
