Phillies slugger Utley has broken hand put in splint

PHILADELPHIA, United States (AFP) — The Phillies All-Star second baseman Chase Utley had his broken right hand put in a modified sling Monday so he can begin light throwing and exercising.

Utley, whose hand was broken on July 26 against Washington when he was hit by a pitch from rookie John Lanaan, will be re-examined by doctor Randall Culp next week, the team said.

Utley remained in that game, but after the injury was diagnosed as a fracture, he had a pin inserted into the hand, instead of placing the hand in a cast, which could have sidelined him for as much as eight weeks.

One of baseball's premier players at his position and an All-Star this season, Utley is batting .336 with 17 homers and 82 RBI.
