Defence key to Champions League place - Rangers boss

GLASGOW (AFP) — Rangers manager Walter Smith admits his team are not great to watch but believes their watertight defence can be the key to unlocking a place in the Champions League.

The Scottish giants secured a 1-0 victory at home to Serbian champions Red Star -- courtesy of Spanish forward Nacho Novo's last minute goal.

But the fact Rangers did not concede an away goal at Ibrox in the first leg of the Champions League third round qualifier could prove just as important as the goal they did score.

The Glasgow side will carry their slender advantage to Belgrade for the second leg on August 28 knowing another clean sheet will secure their place in the lucrative group stage of the competition.
