LOS ANGELES (AFP) — German director Roland Emmerich has been hired to re-make classic science-fiction film "Fantastic Voyage" about a microscopic ship injected into a human body, it was reported Thursday.

Emmerich, famous for blockbusters including "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow", will make the movie 10 years after first being approached to direct a remake of the 1966 film, Variety reported.

The original movie, starring Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasance, is about a scientist dying from a blood clot. To save his life, five scientist colleagues are miniaturized in a ship and injected into his bloodstream.

Emmerich, whose other film credits include "The Patriot" and "Godzilla", recently completed filming on "10,000 BC", to be released in early 2008.
