F1 driver Massa overcomes spirited Hamilton to take Istanbul pole

ISTANBUL (AFP) — Brazilian Felipe Massa overcame a spirited challenge from championship leader Briton Lewis Hamilton on Saturday to grab pole for Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix.

The 26-year-old Latin American from Sao Paulo pushed his Ferrari to the limits in a thrilling climax to the session to take the prime grid position for the fifth time this season.

He wound up just 0.044 seconds ahead of the rookie Englishman in his McLaren, Massa clocking a pole time of one minute 27.329 seconds on the Istanbul park track.

"That was so tough, it was always so close," said Massa after his eighth career pole.

"But I love this track and I love turn eight. It is just a fantastic corner and really makes the track so challenging.

"The last turn is tricky too...
