Scotland's Franchitti grabs pole for Motorola 300

SAN FRANCISCO, United States (AFP) — Reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti won the pole for Sunday's Motorola 300 at Infineon Raceway.

Franchitti, of Edinburgh, didn't need the 10-minute "Saturday Six" qualifying format to win the pole.

Franchitti was fast enough with single-lap qualifications to retain the top starting position with a lap at 107.951 miles per hour around the 2.26-mile, 12-turn road course at the track in Sonoma, 64 kilometres (40 miles) north of San Francisco.

"The track conditions changed quite a lot from this morning's practice so rather than changing the car, it was a case of adapting my style to the circumstances and it worked out well," Franchitti said.

He was four-tenths of a second quicker than his Andretti Green...
