Padres power past Diamondbacks for NL West lead

PHOENIX, United States (AFP) — Brian Giles posted his third multi-homer game since August 11 Monday as the San Diego Padres beat Arizona 10-2 to take a one game lead over the Diamondbacks atop the National League West.
Greg Maddux pitched well into the seventh inning for San Diego, which kick-started a crucial road trip that will continue through Colorado and Los Angeles over the next week.
The Padres connected for four homers in the first three innings. Giles led off the contest against Diamondbacks rookie starter Micah Owings by slamming a 1-0 offering over the right field fence for his ninth homer of the season.
