US, China strike deal over use of lead paint on exported toys

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US and Chinese governments struck an agreement Tuesday aimed at stopping any more Chinese-manufactured toys painted with lead paint reaching US shores.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said it had reached an agreement with China's General Administration of Quality Supervision to boost the safeguards on Chinese-made toys exported to the United States.

"This is an important signal from the Chinese government that it is serious about working with CPSC to keep dangerous products out of American homes," said acting CPSC chairman Nancy Nord.

The agreement followed talks between US and Chinese safety officials in Washington on Tuesday.
