LOS ANGELES (AFP) — The White Stripes have cancelled five upcoming US tour dates for health reasons concerning singer Meg White, the band announced on Wednesday.

A statement on the group's website said White was "suffering from acute anxiety and is unable to travel at this time."

"The White Stripes sincerely apologize to their fans ... We hate to let people down and are very sorry," the statement added.

The cancellation affects concerts in New Mexico, Texas and California scheduled between September 13-19.

The White Stripes' new album, "Icky Thump" entered US charts at No.2 earlier this year and has since sold nearly one million copies.
