Palestinians pray for Ramadan amid tight Israel security

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Tens of thousands of Palestinians attended the first major prayers of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Friday under a heavy Israeli police presence in Jerusalem to guard against disturbances.

Azzam al-Khatib, head of the Waqf, the Islamic trust, said 50,000 people attended the prayers at the ultra-sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque compound on the first Friday of Ramadan, which this year coincides with Jewish new year.

Thousands of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank -- normally banned from entering occupied and annexed east Jerusalem without Israeli permission -- were allowed to travel into the holy city to listen to the sermon.
