Falklands War general Moore dies aged 79

LONDON (AFP) — Major-General Sir Jeremy Moore, who commanded British land forces during the Falklands War 25 years ago and accepted the Argentine surrender, has died aged 79, a newspaper reported Monday.

Moore died on Saturday, The Times daily said. The defence ministry said it could not confirm the report, as Moore was no longer a serving officer.

The military chief saw active service around the world, but the campaign to recover the Falkland Islands from Argentinian forces in 1982 was the pinnacle of his career.

The 74-day Falklands conflict was sparked after Argentine troops staged a surprise landing on the archipelago to assert their claim to the territory on April 2, 1982.
