RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) — Brazil World Cup star Romario has taken over as temporary coach of top club Vasco da Gama after the resignation of Celso Roth, the club said.

The 41-year-old Romario, a star striker in Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning team, has not played for the club for several weeks, but on Monday started his new role by taking training.

Club president Eurico Miranda said: "He (Romario) will lead the team for this match (Wednesday against Mexican club America in the South American Cup), but I would like to say very clearly that, whatever the result, we will be looking for a new coach on Thursday."
