Jailed Bollywood star Dutt makes bail plea

NEW DELHI (AFP) — Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, imprisoned for possessing illegal weapons linked to the 1993 Mumbai bombings, asked the Supreme Court to be released on bail pending an appeal, lawyers said.
Dutt, who returned to prison on Monday after a brief reprieve, sent his appeal to India's highest court through a lawyer from a prison in western Pune city, where he is being held in a high-security cell, his attorneys said.
The burly actor was sentenced July 31 to six years in prison for having illegal weapons received from the plotters of the bombings, which killed 257 people and wounded 800.
But due to a technicality -- that Dutt had not seen a copy of the 4,340-page judgement against him -- he had been out on temporary bail since August.
