NFL fines kicker for obscene gesture

NEW YORK (AFP) — San Francisco 49ers kicker Joe Nedney was fined 7,500 dollars by the National Football League on Thursday for making an obscene gesture toward a spectator in a 31-10 loss to New Orleans.

Nedney apologized for his raised middle finger after being heckled with obscenities by the fan for sending a kickoff out of bounds, which gave the Saints advantageous possession at their 40-yard line.

"That's really out of character for me. I know it showed bad judgement," Nedney said. "I wish I could take that finger and stick it right back down onto my palm, but I can't.

"All I can do is apologize for what I did, pay the fine and hope I didn't tarnish any fan's image of me."

Nedney, an 11-year NFL veteran, has made 8-of-9 field goal attempts this...
