Mariners star Beltre displaces Chavez from Gold Glove perch

NEW YORK (AFP) — Seattle Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre ended Eric Chavez's six-year reign by becoming one of five first-time American League Gold Glove winners on Tuesday.

Beltre led all third baseman with 121 points and 287 assists as he displaced Oakland Athletics star Chavez who captured six straight beginning in 2001.

Beltre joined other first-time winners first baseman Kevin Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox, second baseman Placido Polanco of the Detroit Tigers, outfielder Grady Sizemore of the Cleveland Indians and pitcher Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins.

Youkilis went error-free in 135 games last season, becoming the first qualifying first baseman to register a 1.000 fielding percentage in the history of the AL.
