Strike at Milan's La Scala forces 'Requiem' cancellation

MILAN (AFP) — Staff at Milan's famed La Scala opera house went on a one-day strike on Friday over wages and working conditions, forcing the cancellation of a performance of Verdi's "Requiem", union leaders said.

La Scala's 800 workers want salary increases and better working schedules, arguing that between 2001 and 2007 the number number of performances staged had increased from 164 273.

Friday's "Requiem" was to be conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The conductor, an Israeli of Argentinian origin, is to play a key role with La Scala for at least the next five years.

While unions only called a one-day strike Friday, the dispute raised questions about the opening of the 2007-2008 season.
