China to crack down on bribe-taking by military recruiters

BEIJING, Nov 12, 2007 (AFP) — China's People's Liberation Army will introduce strict new checks to curb an increase in bribery by ineligible recruits seeking to join the world's largest military, state media said Monday.
Recruitment personnel have been warned of "severe" penalties for accepting bribes from any recruits ruled ineligible for physical or other reasons, the Xinhua news agency said.
Recruiters will be required to sign a pledge to resist bribery, while new recruits who are accepted will undergo a second round of health checks to make sure they are eligible.
"Those who are ineligible will be sent back to their hometowns, and those who have accepted the ineligible will be investigated and punished," Xinhua said.
