Baseball star Barry Bonds indicted over steroid probe

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — Baseball superstar Barry Bonds has been indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice after lying to investigators probing a steroid scandal, justice officials said Thursday.

A statement from the California Department of Justice in San Francisco said Bonds had been indicted for lying to investigators during a grand jury hearing into the notorious Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) affair.

San Francisco Giants star Bonds broke the the long-standing all-time home-run record earlier this year but critics have said the milestone is devalued because of doping allegations surrounding the 43-year-old slugger.

He now faces four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to investigators...
