US Phelps to test broken right wrist next week

BALTIMORE, United States (AFP) — US swim star Michael Phelps will use next week's US Short Course Nationals meet at Atlanta to test the strength of his broken right wrist, Phelps told his hometown newspaper.

Phelps, whose quest for a record eight gold medals figures to be the major story of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said he suffered the injury when he slipped getting into a car last month at the University of Michigan, which he attends.

"I really am a fish out of water," Phelps told the Baltimore Sun. "I was falling. I went to catch myself and I tweaked it. I'm lucky it wasn't a major issue but just to be extra safe we had it pinned."
