US president congratulates Australian Labor Party

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush looks forward to working with the new Australian government after Prime Minister John Howard, a staunch Bush ally, suffered an overwhelming electoral defeat by the Labor Party, a White House spokeswoman said Saturday.
"The United States and Australia have long been strong partners and allies and the president looks forward to working with this new government to continue our historic relationship," said spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore.
"President Bush congratulates Kevin Rudd and the Australia Labor Party on their election victory," she told AFP.
The president also complimented Howard, one of his primary allies on the Iraq war.
