Dominican hurler expected to survive after car crash

CLEVELAND, United States (AFP) — Domincan southpaw pitcher Juan Lara of the Cleveland Indians was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday following injuries in an automobile crash, the Major League Baseball club said.

The driver of a motorcycle that struck Lara's suburban utility vehicle and a passenger on the motorcycle were killed instantly in the accident in the Dominican Republic after a Saturday winter league game.

Lara, 26, suffered multiple injuries in the crash and was taken to General Hospital Plaza de la Salud with a blood clot on the brain, a broken vertebare in his neck, a collapsed lung and several broken ribs.
