TOKYO (AFP) — Japan's former national coach Takeshi Okada has accepted an offer to return to the job and replace the ailing Bosnian tactician Ivica Osim, the Japan Football Association said Monday.

Okada, 51, becomes the first Japanese national to coach the team since he quit the job in 1998, taking charge as the side prepares for next year's campaign to win a place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"He has accepted the position of coach in the toughest of times," Saburo Kawabuchi, the association's president, told a news conference.

"We unanimously approved his appointment," he added after the association's managing directors met to discuss the replacement for Osim, who remains in intensive care after suffering a serious stroke on November 16.
