TOKYO (AFP) — World open class champion Yasuyuki Muneta will skip this weekend's Kano Cup international meet due to eye problems, officials said.

Japan's top judoka was scheduled to fight in the 100 kilogramme class in the competition, but he decided to cancel his entry due to corneal trauma, the Japan Judo Federation said ahead of Friday's competition.

It was not immediately known if the eye trouble would affect his bid to take part in next year's Beijing Olympics.

Muneta achieved gold both in this year's world championships in Rio de Janeiro in September and in the 100kg category in Osaka in 2003.
