US 'disturbed' by imprisonment of journalist in Azerbaijan

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States said Friday it was "deeply disturbed" by Azerbaijan's imprisonment of a journalist working for US-funded radio stations in the region, calling it a sign of deteriorating media freedom in the country.

"We are deeply disturbed by the conviction and imprisonment of Ilgar Nasibov, a correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Nakhchivan," said a statement from State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos.

"This action against a representative of a professional and objective media organization is yet another indication of the deterioration of media freedom in Azerbaijan," he said.
