Football star Cahill urges full backing of Australian coach Verbeek

SYDNEY (AFP) — English Premier League star Tim Cahill called Monday for new Australian coach Pim Verbeek to receive long-term backing to restore continuity to the national side.

Dutchman Verbeek, 51, was appointed national coach last week charged with getting Australia to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa after Football Federation Australia officially replaced former coach Guus Hiddink.

The appointment of the former South Korean coach has sparked some criticism here over whether a more high-profile and experienced head coach was needed.

But Everton midfielder Cahill is pleased the FFA have made their decision.
