DEBRECEN, Hungary (AFP) — Poland's Otylia Jedrzejczak set a new short-course world record in the women's 200m butterfly at the European Championships here on Thursday in a time of 2min 03.53sec.
It beat the previous best by China's Yu Yang who clocked 2:04.04 in January 2004 in Berlin.
The new record was also the perfect way for Jedrzejczak to celebrate her birthday as she turned 24 on Thursday.
Jedrzejczak has never been far away from the headlines.
The Olympic champion in 200m butterfly suffered a family tragedy in 2005 when her brother was killed in a car accident.
Hungary's Laszlo Cseh also set a new world record on Thursday in the 200m medley clocking 1min 52.89sec.
The previous best was 1:53.14 set by Brazil's Thiago Pereira in November this year.
