Ice queen Kim makes Grand Prix statement

TURIN, Italy (AFP) — Defending champion Kim Yu-na of South Korea overcame a bad error to lead the ISU Grand Prix final after the short programme here on Friday.

The 17-year-old, skating to a Johann Strauss waltz, tripped up when she could only complete a single toe-loop instead of a triple and had to steady herself by placing a hand on the surface.

But she still managed to finish top of the standings with 64.62 points with American 14-year-old Caroline Zhang in second ahead of home hope Carolina Kostner, the European champion.

"On Saturday, I will do my best to have a clean free programme," said Kim.
