Britain's airports set for January strikes: unions
0 Comments | AFP, December, 2007
LONDON (AFP) — Staff at seven British airports including London's busy Heathrow have voted to strike in January over a pensions row, union bosses said Friday, in a move threatening severe passenger disruption.
The staff will stage 24-hour stoppages on January 7 and January 14 and will strike for 48 hours from January 17.
The Unite trade union said the strike could even force closure of the airports, which comprise Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Its members are protesting against a decision by British airports operator BAA to reduce pension contributions for new employees.
Workers involved include firefighters, as well as maintenance, security and clerical staff.
