NHL tweaks rules for first US outdoor game

BUFFALO, New York (AFP) — Making allowances for possible rink advantages in the first outdoor game played on US ice, the National Hockey League announced rule modifications Saturday when Pittsburgh and Buffalo meet.

NHL star Sidney Crosby will lead the Penguins against Buffalo, whose loyal fans will brave sub-freezing cold and possible wind and snow to watch their team face an Eastern Conference rival on New Year's Day.

The league announced the Sabres and Penguins will switch sides midway through the third period, something common in global play but not done in NHL games.

Teams would also switch rink ends after 2:30 of sudden-death overtime, then play another 2:30 to complete the usual NHL overtime period as needed.
