Miami court to hear Noriega's extradition appeal

MIAMI (AFP) — Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega's battle against extradition to France to face money laundering charges will resume next week after a Miami judge on Thursday set a new court date for his latest appeal.

Federal district judge Paul Huck set January 9 for the hearing, in which Noriega's lawyers want the court to consider whether the French government will respect a ruling from his 1992 US drug trafficking trial that classified him as a prisoner of war.

Noriega, 73, in September completed a 17-year US prison term on drugs charges. He was to be released and flown to France, but he has remained in custody while appeals against his extradition are heard.
