US urges restraint in Kenya as envoy winds down mission

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States on Friday urged Kenya's feuding parties to use restraint as the opposition called for new mass protests and the top US envoy wound down a week-long mission with no sign of progress.
"We hope that any public demonstrations or other kinds of political events are conducted in a peaceful manner and are done with the (aim) of trying to promote a resolution between the parties," Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters.
"We are still continuing to work for a resolution" of the political crisis based on a "made-in-Kenya solution" through talks between President Mwai Kibaki and the main opposition parties, he added.
He again reminded all sides to "avoid anything that would incite violence."
