Former UN chief meets Kibaki as more Kenyans hacked to death

NAIROBI (AFP) — Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan met Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki Thursday for talks to end the crisis sparked by his re-election one month ago, as 12 people died in further clashes.

Annan met with Kibaki at his official State House residence for just over an hour, as police said eight people had been hacked to death in tribal violence near the western Kenyan town of Nakuru, raising the overnight death toll to 12.

"These were just the initial talks," presidential spokesman Isaiya Kabira said after the meeting.

Annan held talks Wednesday with opposition leader Raila Odinga, who claims Kibaki rigged his way to re-election after the December 27 ballot.
