Downhill podium trio share pain of past injuries

CHAMONIX, France (AFP) — The dangers of alpine skiing are known to most, but they became even more apparent here Saturday as the podium finishers shared injury horror stories after the men's downhill.

American Marco Sullivan caused a minor upset by claiming his maiden World Cup win in the Kandahar downhill ahead of resurgent Swiss Didier Cuche and Slovenia's Andrej Jerman.

All three racers are among the dozens whose professional careers have been put on hold at some time or another through injury.

Cuche, who finished second behind Austrian giant Hermann Maier in the 1998 Olympic super-G in Nagano, is having the most consistent season of his career since returning to the circuit in the 2005/2006 season after a spell out with a knee injury.
