BANGALORE, India (AFP) — Six-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will take part in the 600,000-dollar WTA Bangalore Open here next month, joining sister Serena in the draw, organisers announced on Monday.
The 27-year-old American, who lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, will compete for the title at India's richest tennis tournament from March 3-9, but local favourite Sania Mirza will not be on hand.
"I can confirm that the Bangalore Open will have both the (Williams) sisters playing," organiser Sunder Raju told reporters here.
"I don't know why Sania has not entered," he said.
Mirza has been hampered by a leg injury since her defeat to Venus Williams at the Australian Open.
