Mormons name 80-year-old as new leader

CASPER, Wyoming (AFP) — Mormon leaders on Monday announced Thomas Monson, 80, had been named as the new head of the church to take over from the president who died a week ago.
Gordon Hinckley, who died on January 28 from natural causes at the age of 97 was buried Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a ceremony attended by thousands of followers. Among the mourners was Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.
Monson becomes the 16th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Mormon movement is known.
Hinckley, considered a prophet by church members, had served as president since March 1995.
