US prepares visa ban for Kenyan officials: ambassador

NAIROBI (AFP) — The United States is preparing to impose a visa ban on Kenyan officials who played a role in the violence that erupted after disputed elections, the US ambassador has told a Kenyan daily newspaper.
"We have identified a number of people that could potentially be subject to these visa restrictions," Ambassador Michael Ranneberger told The Standard in an interview published Tuesday.
Under the measure, "any perpetrator, supporting or inciting violence, and their families would not be issued visas" to travel to the United States, he said.
Normally peaceful Kenya plunged into violence after elections on December 27 that President Mwai Kibaki won but the opposition claims was rigged. International observers have cited serious flaws during vote-counting.
