After record year, Daimler forecasts moderate growth in 2008

STUTTGART, Germany (AFP) — Reporting record performance for 2007, German luxury car maker Daimler forecast on Thursday more moderate growth in 2008 owing to a weakening global economy and the effects of the US housing crisis.

Daimler posted a 2007 net profit of 4.0 billion euros (5.8 billion dollars), an increase of 5.3 percent from the figure in 2006.

The result included 2.2 billion euros in costs from the divestment of loss-making US auto group Chrysler, and gains from the transfer of shares in the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), a statement said.

Core earnings shot up to 8.710 billion euros from 4.992 billion, an increase of 74.5 percent, while sales were broadly flat at 99.4 billion euros.
